Ancestral Wisdom, field notes and rememberings on connecting with our ancestral ecosystems and living a more connected and resourced life.

dear ancestors

February 18, 2024 tamira cousett

A prayer...

A spell...

An invocation for remembering the layers of ecology that support our practices of liberation.

May we always remember we are connected to ecologies of liberation.

May we always remember the rhythms of liberation emanate from the primordial pulses of creation that animate our bodies and spirits.

If it feels resonant, we invite you to join our ritual container of practice.

accountability is a relational field of practice

February 18, 2024 tamira cousett

Accountability is a relational field of practice.
🪼
Language is a tool for seeding liberatory realities and futures. Language is a tool that can both flatten and breathe depth into the imaginal realms of possibility. We must hold it close and be clear on the language we use in service to our visions and dreams of collective liberation.
🪼
Systems of dominance and empire thrive off of us not having a clear command of the language we use to shape our visions.
🪼
“Definitions are vital starting points for the imagination. What we cannot imagine cannot come into being. A good definition marks our starting point and lets us know where we want to end up.” -bell hooks
🪼
Our kin in Congo, Rafa, Gaza, Sudan, and Tigray and here in the States are inviting us to practice accountability with them and ourselves. These invitations feel much different than attempting to source accountability through larger systems of dominance and empire.
🪼
Yes, we have to put pressure on these systems of domination and empire, divest from them, and be willing to dismantle them. We are also responsible for supporting each other via mutual aid, solidarity, marching, calling for multiple cease-fires, and showing up in ways we don’t yet have language for because new praxis is emerging in real-time alongside us.
🪼
We also have to interrogate how the fingerprints of these systems exist in many of the conveniences in our daily lives. Are we willing to practice accountability with ourselves and our kin on this level? I am deep in the grief and discomfort of these questions myself. I know the answers will impact how I source food, what foods I eat, how I engage with technology, and how I move through the world. I’m deep in it with you.

thank you ancestors

February 18, 2024 tamira cousett

Our beloved ancestors exist in ecology just like we do. Like us, they are ecological beings woven into tapestries of kinship and belonging. When we call on and connect with them, there is always an invitation to affirm their connections with the larger bodies of wisdom and ecology they are woven into. These bodies of ecology and wisdom can often be conduits of ancestral connections supporting us in the practice field we call life.
🌊
When I feel into these bodies of ecology, I feel the presence of the omi aiye (earthly waters) that run through our bodies, carrying ancestral memory while sustaining the larger webs of life; I feel the presence of afẹ́fẹ́ (the winds) we breathe that carry the ase of our ancestors on its back, our first breath, our last breath and those in between while maintaining the larger webs of life.
💨
As the ancestors returned, we, too, are woven into these larger bodies of wisdom and ecology, and there are so many more that support and affirm our lives, belonging, and journeys toward collective liberation.
☀️
In Elder Wisdom, we offer a ritual container of practice for exploring the vast networks of ancestral ecologies that affirm our lives, uplift our belonging, and mirror back to us generative lifeways. We dedicate the ẹmi (spirit) of our practice towards our collective liberation and our homecoming journeys with our ancestral ecologies and elder wisdom fields that want us to be free. We warmly invite you to join us.

alaafia nice to meet you

January 31, 2024 tamira cousett

Alaafia interwebs community. I have never taken the time to introduce myself here on this platform, and I want to take a moment to do so. As our worlds continue to unravel around and within us, it feels generative to have human connections and remember that humans are on the other side of the screen.

Here's a little more about me:

I am the descendant and kin of peoples from West Africa and the British and Irish Isles by way of Alabama, Ohio, and Kentucky.

I am a parent of extraordinary human beings and many fur and feather kin. Books, baths, and bed are my love language.

For 15 years, I've worked as an air quality scientist supporting communities adversely impacted by industry while helping develop air monitoring methods.

For almost a decade, I've continued to train as a ritualist and ancestral medium within afro-diaspora spiritual traditions. This work is held by layers of human, plant, earth, and elemental elders and ancestors who companion me. With their blessings and support, we co-weave 1:1 and group ritual containers and practice fields, inviting folks to connect with their ancestral ecosystems and elder wisdom fields. These ritual containers and practice fields center the open-sourced wisdoms of Black, Queer, Indigenous, and Womanist liberation theologies and ecologies.

On my little corner of the interwebs, I share some of the ancestral wisdoms that emerge as I continue to grow and transform as a human being. These ancestral wisdoms are rooted in the remembering that we are all woven into collective tapestries of ancestral ecosystems and ecologies. I hope these wisdoms support folks in remembering their place/belonging in these tapestries and that they have access to the vast layers of ancestral support that sustain their lives. I hope these insights inspire folks to remember that our journey towards collective liberation is part of our ancestral legacy as humans, that we all have our unique pieces to contribute in our lifetimes and beyond, and that we need the support of our ancestors and elders as we engage and craft pathways towards love and liberation.

Wishing you ire (blessings) and ease as you explore authentic pathways of connection & communion with the ancestral ecosystems and elder fields of wisdom that support your life.

Alaafia, It's so lovely to meet you.

notes on meeting the new year

January 2, 2024 tamira cousett
1.png 2.png 3.png

Here on Turtle Island, we are on the heels of Freedom's Eve/Watch Night, commonly known as New Year's Eve, and Heartbreak Day, also known as New Year's Day.

For the past two nights, I've hugged my children tightly in lingering embraces and held them without the looming fears of forced separation consuming me.

For the past two nights, I've soaked in hot baths, inhaling warm clouds of steam floating off the surface of waters fragranced with cedarwood, vetiver, and sandalwood notes.

In these waters, I've felt grief and hope and offered these feelings toward the co-regulation of collective ancestral nervous systems alongside my own. In these waters, I returned to the we that came before, the we that endures. In these waters, I held some of the last words my grandma Rita wrote me, turning them over in my mind like a spell, reciting them like a mantra.."slow down and take a breath."

I took a breath.

We took a breath.

I took several breaths.

We took several breaths and engaged in a chorus of breathing across generations.

This chorus of breathing felt far more generative than any resolution I could craft because, unlike my former resolutions, these breaths led me back to the self of my current reality. This breathing chorus led me back to an ecological self woven into vast ancestral ecosystems and lineages of love with a strong sense of belonging.

This friend has been my offering to greet the new year, engaging the ritual practice of remembering the histories of Freedom's Eves/Watch Nights and Heartbreak Days past. Creating space to honor the past and the partially healed version of reality, we exist and persist within. A version of reality where we can exercise greater agency over our bodies while avoiding the fates of the auction blocks we once knew, a version of reality where there is still so much more healing to do amid the deep suffering that is companioning the profound beauty of aliveness.

In lieu of setting resolutions toward a future version of me, we are doing what feels most generative in these holy days. We are pausing in the liminal space between endings and beginnings.

We are breathing, feeling, co-regulating, dreaming, and remembering that the me of the future is not made possible through resolutions I craft as an individual but through the collective and relational ecologies of my current reality, the larger we.

What feels most generative in these holy days for you? How are you meeting the liminal space between endings and beginnings?

In curiosity & hope,

Tamira

PS Many thanks to Alexis Pauline Gumbs for the Black Feminist Breathing Chorus and to Octavia Raheem for the medicine on the liminal space.

field notes on tension

December 15, 2023 tamira cousett

field notes on the study of tension:

At its core, tension is neutral and has impulses toward articulating change and transformation.

What is not neutral is how systems of dominance and oppression weaponize tension to further the agendas of violence and separation.

The models and mechanisms of empire that warp tension cannot be our only reference points for engaging tension.

Tension is our companion and accomplice on our journeys of liberation.

It is possible to engage non-generative tension in generative ways that affirm life; our current reality is evidence of this. Our practices of openly grieving, staying engaged and aware of what is happening, sharing information, rooting in community, protesting and disrupting, engaging in acts of solidarity and mutual aid, and caring for ourselves and one another are clear evidence.

Our responses to our current conditions must also come from the interiority of our inner landscapes, from those parts of ourselves that are unyielding to the brutality of colonialism, from the integrity of internal architectures shaped by the generational wisdom of our elders, ancestors, lineages, kin and future descendanTs.

For the past 3 years, @sacredgriefshaunajanz and I have been cultivating and dreaming into fields of practice where we explore and grow our capacities to welcome ecological responses to the heartbreak and beauty in the world and in our lives. We hope you will join us as we practice listening to our bodies, our elder fields of wisdom, and our ancestral ecosystems rooted in love and liberation.

Elder Wisdom Invites us to Engage

December 8, 2023 tamira cousett

As we withness global genoc1de and oppress1on and the violent legacies of colonialism, we must develop praxis for tending our inner landscapes so that we can offer that which is generative to our worlds. Now is the time to trust the wisdom of our grieving bodies, which signals that something is amiss in our worlds. Our responses to our current conditions must also come from the interiority of our inner landscapes, from those parts of ourselves that are unyielding to the brutality of colonialism, from the integrity of internal architectures shaped by the generational wisdom of our elders, ancestors, lineages, kin and future descendants.

Our bodies are ecological beings informed by our collective ecologies and ecosystems. As we practice trusting and centering the body's wisdom, we move into deeper layers of connection with these ecosystems. And invite whole ecosystems and layers of lineage to shape our responses and resource our liberation practices. What we practice and how we practice catalyzes change and transformation. Even amid great suffering, our world is a liberatory practice field, and we must practice. #ase #ecologicalbeing #ancestralwisdom #wisdomofthebody #trust #practice #elderwisdom #ancestralecosystems #fieldofpractice #liberation #love #curiosity #resource #ancestralassignment #descendantofradicalimagination #ritual #grief #hope #portal #grow #change #transform #explore #ancestors #elders #lineage #kin #descendants #joinus #community

more field notes on tension

we do not always have full control over how external systems and forces apply non-generative tension to our bodies.

but, we do have the agency to self-determine how we engage that tension and tension in general.

rooting in our agency and dignity allows us to engage non-generative tension in generative ways.

may we always remember we have choice. may we always root in our dignity and agency.

Elder Wisdom

December 2, 2023 tamira cousett

In these times of deep change, collective grief & revolution, we offer our field of practice, Elder Wisdom.

In this offering, we affirm that our collective ability to practice embodying love and liberation is part of how we dismantle oppressive systems in our worlds and our bodies. And we invoke every layer of ancestral resource that desires to support us on this journey.

We offer a glimpse into the pillars that have supported us in deepening our connections with our ancestral ecosystems as we continue exploring the practice of embodying love and liberation in this lifetime.

For folks who wish to engage in a field of practice rooted in love and liberation and shaped by curiosity, these are foundational aspects of what we offer in Elder Wisdom.

There is no magic formula, linear methodology, or pathology for connection; instead, we offer an experiential field of practice because we trust that our bodies are portals of connection to the Elder Fields of Wisdom and Ancestral Ecosystems that live within us.

notes on generative tension

November 28, 2023 tamira cousett
1.png 2.png 3.png

I'm in the study of discerning the difference between tension that flattens our fields of practice, distracts us, isolates us, and narrows access to ecosystems of care versus tension that is generative and inspires ecological responses to its presence and all that it stirs within us collectively and individually.
🪞
As a recovering people pleaser who previously vowed to diffuse tension at any cost in my youth, it never occurred to me that tension could be generative and might require a response or holding greater than my own as an individual. It never occurred to me that I could resource myself via webs of ecology to meet tension and all it stirred.
🪞
Much of this study has required me to sloooooow down and work on lovingly interrupting my conditioned reactions to tension in general so that I can discern what flavor of tension is arising and respond accordingly.
🪞
There is more to be shared, and I hope to do that soon.
🪞
In the meantime, what tension is stirring in your life?
Where and how do you experience it?
Do you have a practice of discerning between different kinds of tension?
🤎
Onward towards love & liberation.

[Quote on tan background with a warm neutral and pink watercolor curve in opposite corners reads Reminder- keep saying "yes" to generative tension. generative tension enables change and stirs the field of possibility. generative tension evokes ecological responses to change and communal visioning into new possibilities.]

things i wish i knew when i began ancestral work

November 28, 2023 tamira cousett

after almost a decade of ancestral work, including connection and veneration practices, here are a few tidbits I wish I had known when I started my journey:

🤎we are wrapped in layers of lineage (we are thick with lineage)
🤎hierarchy doesn’t have to shape our practices of connection (it can often flatten the fields of connection)
🤎it’s ok to start where there is positive resource/easeful connection (but don’t get stuck)
🤎we belong to more-than-human lineages (we are thick with belonging)
🕸️
in these times of deep collective grief, unraveling, and change, i hope these tidbits support anyone who feels the call to become more deeply resourced and connected with the ancestral ecosystems that sustain and affirm life. they are closer than you think; you are the portal of connection.
🕸️
we have long outgrown individual responses to our collective needs; we need ecological responses to hold and guide us. now is the time to invoke every layer of support.
🕸️
for those who wish to explore ancestral ecosystems in a field of practice,
@sacredgriefshaunajanz and I will offer Elder Wisdom again on December 20th. as a reminder, all past participants are welcome to all 2hr Elder Wisdom offerings at no cost— look for that email soon! lets keep growing our practice field. register in bio!

a spell for hope

November 9, 2023 tamira cousett

hope is the practice of staying connected to ourselves and our ecosystems.

my work is to stay open to the hope that lives in me and all of my kin.

my work is to source hope from wells much deeper than my own.

on this day the cool waters of the atlantic ocean bathed my feet in hope.

how are your connecting to hope?

a spell for heartbreak

November 5, 2023 tamira cousett

the very real work of these times is learning to sit with and presencing our personal and collective heartbreak.

our heartbreak will catalyze us into co-creating more generative and life-affirming ways of being.

we must learn to trust our heartbreak

we must feel our way through these times

a loving & liberatory praxis of being is blooming in and through us.

a hymn for grief

October 27, 2023 tamira cousett

the lights and internet have been disconnected in gaza as the empire carries out its deeds in darkness, but we know what is happening, and we don't need sight to feel the ripples of loss and violence surging through the web of life.

no matter who you are and or what you believe, i hope you take time to grieve and withness, not consume the Palestinian peoples' struggles of resistance.

may none of us believe that our physical distance from these events serves as any measure of safety or boundaries from the global reach of empire and oppression.

may we all remember that we are moving towards collective liberation for all.

may we abandon our composure, may we grieve, and may our hearts be broken wide open.
